In the year 1940, Pune Nagarpalika decided to start a bus service to cater to the need of all commuters of ""PUNE CITY''. When this news spread, at that time, the Tangawalas, who were transporting the passengers, opposed and went on a STRIKE. Gradually, in the year 1941, the RTO issued permission to PUNE NAGARPALIKA to run the BUS SERVICE in PUNE CITY AREA and ultimately permission was granted to M|s Silver Jubilee Motor co, by PUNE NAGARPALIKA to start a BUS SERVICE On 2nd June 1941, Silver Jubliee Motor Co. services started the Bus SERVICES with following fleets.
INITIALY only four routes mentioned below were operated and all the buses driven were of PETROL.
- SWARGATE TO PUNE STATION
- SWARGATE TO SHIVAJINAGAR
- LAKADI POOL TO JUNA POOL GATE (CAMP)
- PUNE STATION TO LAKaDI POOL (DECCAN
The FARE charges was 1-ANNA (6 paise) per mile.But later on it was converted into Rupees and kilometers in the year 1959.TEA ALLOWANCE of 2- ANNAs i.e. (12paise) Was paid to the staff.
The silver Jubliee Motor co. informed the Government about their non continuance of the Bus Service on the expiry of their permits (i.e.upto1950) By that time, the PUNE NAGARPALIKA was formed into a CORPORATION as PUNE MUNICIPAL CORPORATION which was established on 15th Feb. 1950 and within a short period of 15 days i.e. on 1st of March 1950, Bus Services were started under the name and style of PUNE MUNICIPAL TRANSPORT (PMT) in accordance with BPMC Act 1949, by taking over 22 old buses and 35 new buses along with staff, by raising a loan or bonds of Rs.15 lakh. These buses were plied on 14 routes only.
Initially, the buses were of small size with a seating capacity of only 14 and no standies were allowed. Gradually it was converted to 22. In the year 1950- ordinary fare of 5 paise was charged. Luxury Buses were introduced for site seeing purpose by charging Rs.2 per adult and Rs.1 for under 12 years, as fare.Then in the year 1960-the buses were added to the fleet bringing the total number of buses to 135. Till 1951, standees were not allowed in the buses, but later on permission was obtained from the Govt. for allowing standees.
Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Transport (PCMT) Department was established on 4th March 1974 .Pimpri bus depot was situated near the current vegetable market place The department began with 8 bus of TATA make. At the beginning of the route No. 101 (Pimpri village to Bhosri) and route No. 301 (Pimpri village to Bhosari) were running.
Second bus depot of PCMT was started in 1988 at current Gavhane vasti Bhosari bus stop. Later this depot got shifted to Dhawade Vasti, Bhosari. At that time PCMT had fleet of 101 buses with 13 routes and 45 schedules. * According to population of PCMC in 517089, optionally on Date 29/8/1992 Nigdi Depot was founded on the need to increase the number of buses in the depot date.*
PUNE being an historical place, and was called as PUNEWADI,KASBA PUNE, Poona,pune,PUNE NAGARPALIKA ,PUNE MUNICIPAL CORPORATION etc. in the past and surrounded by FORTS,RIVERS,GARDENS,GREENERIES,etc. It is WELL KNOWN FOR EDUCATION, a military center, famous for and Religious functions, cultural activity, DRAMAS,CINEMAS,Pune was also known as a pensioner silver city. But now it is becoming I T city, B R T city a perfect city to live and enjoy. After the flood in the year 1961, TREMENDOUS growth in development of the city was happened because of availability of transport services, and gradually the PMPML fleet became bigger and bigger the population started increasing in the pune city.

The company PMPML ¼ Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd. ½ came into existence, on 19/10/2007 when the Two Transport Undertakings viz PMT and PCMT merged.
PMPML caters its Bus Services to the Puneites and plays a vital role in providing affordable and convenient Public Transport Service that help the people reach any nook and corner in and around PMC and PCMC area. It is useful for different groups of people like students, employed people, senior citizens, people visiting Pune city etc. PMPML Bus Service has been serving the people on the same line of PMT, formely known as Pune Muncipal Transport, since last 58 years. PMPML has a share in the City Developments as people give priority to that areas where PMPML Buses ply while selecting their houses to settle down. The company, PMPML was formed on 19th October 2007.
PMPML have its Managing Director, who is an IAS officer and Board of Directors. The management consist the main officers :

c) Chief Engineer
d) Finance Manager
e) Civil Engineer
f) Controllers of Stores
g) Administrative Officer
h) Labour & Public Relation officer
The Pune Municipal Transport Committee has been formed in accordance to the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949 (BPMC). The PMPML is run as per the provisions in this Act. The operational system of PMPML consists of 3 basic components:
A) Managing Director :
Bus Transport is the primary function of the PMPML. Responsibility of controlling the bus transport has been assigned to the Managing Director. Reviewing the existing routes, altering them if necessary, attending to the demands and suggestions of the passengers, surveying and planning new routes, management of the main bus stations and depots, assigning tasks to the staff working at the depots, bus-station and buses and deciding their work-schedules are the responsibilities of the Managing Director.
The head of all the depots and main bus stations, transport planning and execution officers, transport supervisory staff are accountable to the Managing Director. To preserve lost property of the passengers, ensure their return after ascertaining the identity of the claimant, to attend to PMPML accidents, take measures for preventing accidents, conduct departmental enquiries of staff are the tasks which fall under the preview of the Managing Director officer.
B) Joint Managing Director :
He is responsible for over all functioning of the company. The following officers except Chief Executive Officer are placed under him.
1) Chief Engineer :
Efficient use of the bus-vehicles, repairs and maintenance, implementing the regulations in the Pollution laws and Motor Transport Act are the chief responsibilities of the Chief Engineer. Overall maintenance and upkeep of the buses is his primary responsibility. He controls the Central Workshop as well as the repairs and maintenance sections of all the depots and main bus stations. To see that there is an adequate supply of tools and implements necessary for repairs and maintenance, spare parts, tyres, fuel and related incidental items and monitor their optimum usage, keep a record of fuel efficiency of the buses, their comparative studies, take measures for maximum fuel efficiency of the vehicles, make an "age-wise analysis" of the vehicles, get the vehicles passed through the RTO department are the tasks that fall under the preview of the Chief Engineer. Staff in the Central Workshop, Maintenance Heads and other staff in all the depots and main bus stations, technicians and technical staff, Stores manager are all accountable to the Chief Engineer.
2) Traffic Manager :
Route planning, Route Scheduling, Time table, Sports event, Cultural planning, Advertisement on bus, bus shelter are being managed by him.
3) Civil Engineer :
The responsibility of maintenance and repairs of all PMPML buildings, commercial complexes, main bus stations, main depots, staff colonies, bus-stops lies with the Civil Engineer. The Head Office Building and Central Workshop at Swargate, Commercial Complexes at Swargate, Hadapsar and Deccan Gymkhana, six main depots and 18 main bus stations are all looked after and maintained by the Civil Engineer's office.
4) Chief Accounts and Finance Officer :
He is responsible for the transaction related to financial matters of the company.
5) Administrative Officer :
The Administrative Officer has primarily administrative responsibilities. Matters such as appointments, salaries, promotions, retirements of staff are taken care of by him.
6) Security Officer : .
Matters related to the safety and security of the company is looked by him.
C) Chief Executive Officer :
All the function of Company Secretary, calculating conducting meetings of Board of Directors, preparing resolutions as per discussion, preparing as per document notes, implementation of the discussion by Board of Directors.
The main function of PMPML, are thus divided and carried out. The total staff of PMPML is nearly eight and half thousand. Out of these, around the hundred work in the offices. The remaining six and half thousand are drivers-conductors-workers. It is their collective effort that keeps the PMPML running.
- Frequency of Ring Route buses will be increased.
- Hub-n-Spoke system will be developed on major roads of the city.
- Process of hiring new buses has been completed and new buses are coming.
- Quality of the PMPML Services will be improved by following cordial behavior.
- Quality of PMPML service will be customer friendly.
- All sections of PMPML shall be computerized.
- E-Ticketing system has been introduced.
- Pass system would be computerized from expert IT Organization.
- Training shall be given to al levels through CIRT and Yashada.
- PMPML routes would be rationalized accordingly.
- Time- table of all routes will be available within short period.
- Modernized buses will be available for IT Companies and PVT. Companies on monthly basis. All these buses shall be Air conditioned and two by two chairs
